Behaviour in public places Sudan is situated between and influenced by African and Islamic-Arab culture. It is a complex country with a broad range of different ethnic populations; it is only possible to give very general advice on behaviour. Sudan views itself as an Islamic country, even although some of the population is Catholic or follows animistic beliefs. Clothes Wear clothes covering at least your knees and shoulders. You will not be expected to cover your head or hair, although this can be useful to protect yourself against the strong sun and the dust. Taking pictures First, be sure that the person you want to photograph agrees. Many Sudanese people refuse to be photographed because of religious beliefs; others feel insulted if the poverty in which they live is photographed. Please also refrain from taking pictures of places or people of strategic importance (this term can be very widely interpreted!): e.g. harbours, bridges, airports, police, army and army facilities. On the ship (Islamic crew) Although many ships are getting used to European attitudes and behaviour, please be respectful towards the traditions and culture of the Sudanese crew. Please always wear a swimsuit and do not sunbathe topless. Muslims pray five times a day. Do not disturb the crew during prayers. Shopping/money …Sudan is an Arabic country, and you may think that you will have to haggle… However, in Sudan this is only true for luxury goods and tourist souvenirs. Even if you think you are paying a little (!) more than the Sudanese do for everyday goods, the prices are so low for us that it would get ridiculous for Europeans to haggle for every last penny. Since 1.1.2007 the currency in use in Sudan is the New Sudanese Pound (SDG). 1 Euro = ca. 3 SDG 1 US Dollar = ca. 2 SDG Still you will often hear prices in Old Sudanese Pounds at the market or in shops. 1'000 old SP = 1 new SDG If you should you need local currency in Port Sudan, you will be able to change money there. Shops usually also accept USD or Euro banknotes. If you are buying at the market, however, you should have Sudanese Pound because of the low prices.
